本研究は、人が心理的に自立し、心の健康（well-being）を維持し、自分らしく自己実現して生活するために、「自分固有の物理的空間」を持つことが必要である、すなわち、物理的空間が人の心理的な自立や発達を支えうると言う仮説を実証することを目的としている。本研究では、研究の対象を、18歳以下の同居する子を持つ既婚女性とする。先行研究において、彼女らは家族成員の中で最も「自分固有の物理的空間」を所有することが難しいことが指摘されている（上野，2002）。2022年度の前半は、ウェブ調査の実施の準備として、先行研究を検討し、調査で使用する質問項目の選定と調査対象者の選定を行なった。「自分固有の物理的空間」に関する質問は、「自分固有の物理的空間」の有無、有している場合、どのような空間か、その空間で何をしているのかについて質問することとした。また、比較のため、夫の「自分固有の物理的空間」の有無と、子ども室の有無についても尋ねることにした。心理的自立と心の健康に関する心理測定尺度は、心理的なプライバシー志向性は「プライバシー志向性尺度」（吉田・溝上，1996）により質問することにした。加えて、心理的自立は、「家族の個人化尺度」（松永，2015）、自立に関連する活動を欲する程度は、「達成動機尺度」（Lang & Fries, 2006）、心の健康は、WHOのSubjective Well-Being Inventoryを簡便化した「主観的幸福尺度」（伊藤ら，2003）を使用し、測定することにした。調査対象者は、同居する末子の年齢が18歳以下の既婚女性とし、国勢調査を参考に就業状態を考慮し、選定することとした。2022年度の後半は、ウェブ調査の実施と、調査結果の分析を行った。調査協力者は、18歳以下の同居する子どもがいる既婚女性563名である（平均年齢39.0歳)。詳細は分析中である。
