Hybrid Consolidation

The project takes as novel research approach a largely decoupling of the imbedding of the fibers from the manufacturing of composite structures. The temporal decoupling is realized by bonding consolidated semi-finished products. An important aspect in this process is the quality assurance with regard to the geometric quality of the semi-finished product and the quality of material. Obviously, the pre-consolidation of the material restricts the flexibility of the semi-finished product which, in turn, restricts the realization of complex structural geometries. The focus on large two-dimensional or even slightly curved load-bearing structures like grid frameworks enables the application of the lay-up and bonding of consolidated tapes. Undulations and fiber waviness are avoided through this novel approach. The global precision of the layup can be controlled. The project pursues as fundamental research hypothesis that the lamination of consolidated slit tapes yields the same mechanical properties as laminates made from prepreg tapes.
