项目摘要

前年度から引き続き，新型コロナウィルス感染症の拡大が続いたため，対面での集団実験は実施不可能となった．そこでオンラインで実行可能な実験案を進めることとし，心が脳の物理的境界を越えて環境へと拡張しうるという主張である「拡張された心」仮説 (The Extended Mind Hypothesis: EMH) の実験的検証を行った．Clark and Chalmers (1998) によれば，何が行為者の認知過程の構成要素とみなされるかは，皮膚や頭蓋骨の境界によって決定されるのではなく，行為者が従事している実践に対してそれが関与する仕方（つまりは機能）によって決定される．このように素朴心理学的な機能主義，いわば「常識機能主義」が重大な論証上の役割を担っているにも関わらず，常識機能主義に関する解明はほとんど行われてこなかった．そこで，Clark and Chalmers (1998) のものに類似したシナリオを用いて，EMH に関する実験哲学的な調査を行った．ブラウザ上で回答可能な質問紙を作成し，数回の予備実験を重ねて内容を精緻化した後に，本実験を実施し，約 600 名からデータを取得した．調査の結果として，人々は，認知を補助する器具が担う情報は，行為者の記憶・信念・知識とみなせると判断する傾向にあった．すなわち，デバイスにまで記憶・信念・知識が拡張すると人々はみなす傾向にあるようである．この結果は，少なくともいくつかの心的状態に関して常識機能主義が人間心理として存在することを初めての実験的に支持するものである．この結果は応用哲学会年次研究大会で発表された．この内容は現在，論文としてまとめ投稿中である．
