初年度の令和３年度には，日本国内において「散居」といわれる地域の抽出と，郷土史や異分野も含めた先行研究や文献史資料の収集を行い，散居に関わる国内の研究動向の把握および成立要因に関する知見の整理を行なった。また，本研究で試みる「離散度」の指標化に向けて，地理学分野ほかの先行研究について情報収集を行なった。その上で，主要な散居地域である砺波平野・讃岐平野・簸川平野・児島湾干拓地・有明海沿岸域に関し，離散度の解析に必要となる地図資料（国土地理院 旧版地形図等）の入手およびデジタル化に向けたデータベース構築作業を開始した。加えて，今後のフィールドワーク対象地区の選定と資料収集，調査の実施方法の検討を行なった。また，研究代表者及び分担者が過去に調査を行なった児島湾干拓地について，他地域に先行して離散型居住の観点からの再度詳細な検証作業を試み，論文投稿を行なっている（日本建築学会計画系論文集，令和4年9月号掲載，査読有）。上記の一連の作業を行うにあたり，共同研究者間でオンラインによる打ち合わせを月１度の頻度で実施するとともに、視察を兼ねた対面での打ち合わせを新潟において実施した。ただし，新型コロナウィルス感染症拡大の影響で，当初予定していた現地調査の一部については，次年度に延期する必要が生じるなど，当初予定の一部を変更し実施することとなった。繰越承認にもとづき，令和4年4月に簸川平野の実地調査を行い，奥出雲のたたら製鉄による鉄穴流しと簸川平野の形成の関係を理解し，令和4年5月には大井川下流域の実地調査を行い，洪水対策として生み出された独特の屋敷形態とその地域的な構成について把握した。
