本研究は、前期高齢者を対象とし、低舌圧の早期診断と舌運動訓練が口腔機能低下症予防・改善に及ぼす影響を明らかにすることを目的とし計画した。口腔機能低下症に関しては多くの研究が行われているが、口腔機能低下症の予防および治療法については、未だ確立されていない。そこで本研究では、対照群と3種類の実験群（実験群１：舌トレーニング用具を用いる群、実験群２：棒付きキャンデーを用いる群、　実験群３：舌トレーニングアプリを用いる群）の合計4群に同じ割合で低舌圧被験者と境界域被験者を応募順に順次割り付け、介入研究を開始する予定であった。しかしながら、先行研究がほとんどないため、まずは実験群１：舌トレーニング用具を用いる群のみでの全数調査を行う必要があるとの広島臨床研究開発支援センターの指摘を受け、研究計画に改良を加え、「医療用ペコぱんだを用いた前期高齢者への早期舌トレーニングが口腔機能に与える影響に関する研究」として広島大学臨床研究審査委員会の承認を得てjRCTに登録した（jRCT番号：jRCT1062220055）。本研究の被検者選択基準は①同意取得時の年齢が65歳以上、74歳以下の者②広島大学病院への通院が可能な者③本研究の参加に関して本人からの同意が文書で得られる者とした。研究対象者は医療用ペコぱんだを用いた舌訓練を一日３セット毎日行い、４週間に一度来院し最大舌圧を測定、適切な医療用ペコぱんだをその都度選択し、24週間訓練を継続することとした。研究開始時および24週後、48週後には口腔機能検査も行う計画とした。現在研究途中ではあるが、30名の被検者に対し４週の訓練後に24名、８週の訓練後に26名の最大舌圧値が増加しており、口腔機能低下症によい影響を与える可能性が高いと考えている。脱落する被検者もなく順調に研究進行しており、今後も有益な知見が得られると確信している。
