本研究の目的は、18-19世紀の市民革命期に欧米諸国で形成された共和政の特性を、「王のいる共和政」を起点にしつつ、君主政・立憲制・市民権・国民国家・連邦制・独裁などの国制の諸概念とその実態を参照軸に、国際比較の上で再検討する。これによって、必ずしも民主政と等価の関係にない近代共和政がもつ多様性を確認しつつ、「王のいる共和政」から「王のいない共和政」への転換に着目することで、近代史の総合的な再構築を図る。つまり、欧米近代に内包される複数の様態に着目し近代の総点検を行うことにより、旧来の主権国家像および国民国家像の相対化、ひいては、近代歴史学の従来の認識とその世界史像に転換を促すことを本科研の主眼としている。今年度は、この目的の多くを達成することができた。というのも、本科研の研究代表及び分担者の多くがかかわっていた前科研「ジャコバン主義の再検討：「王のいる共和政」の国際比較研究」(2017-2020)の成果として、中澤達哉編『王のいる共和政：ジャコバン再考』を岩波書店から6月末に出版した。これにあわせて、2022年9月に1度、同10月に2度、2023年3月に1度、西洋政治思想史、日本史、西洋史の研究者による拙編著の合評会をリアルタイムオンラインで開催したのである。この合評会での総合討論には、2021～22年度の本科研の研究成果をクロスさせる位置づけで臨んだ。西洋政治思想史研究者、日本史研究者との総合討論は本科研の方向性を改めて確認し、かつ、より多角的な論点の存在を自覚させてくれた。次年度に向けて、本科研の研究活動を多様化する方向に向かわせてくれたのである。2023年度に開催する国際ワークショップを充実したものにすることができるであろう。
