本プロジェクトの要である全国SOGI無作為抽出調査を、2023年2月に全国の18歳から69歳の18,000人を対象に郵送法（ウェブ回答併用）により実施した。調査対象者は2022年住民基本台帳から都市規模と地域区分による層化二段無作為抽出法によって抽出した。抽出と実査は、全国調査の経験が豊富な調査会社に委託した。調査票作成にあたっては、2019年1月に実施した無作為抽出調査「大阪市民の働き方と暮らしの多様性と共生にかんするアンケート」（大阪市民調査）で用いた設問を再検討した。また、新たに家族形成の経験と希望、妊娠・出産・挙児にかかわる経験・希望、居住地移動の設問を検討した。2021年秋に実施した60代と70代の人びと対象としたSOGIをたずねる項目についての認知インタビューの結果も参考にした。調査実施時には、「送付物一覧」、「アンケートご協力のお願い」、「外国語によるアンケートのご案内」、「Q & A アンケートの対象者になった方へのご説明」、「インターネット回答のご案内」を調査票と共に対象者に送付した。また、調査対象者向けのホームページを作成し、回答方法や調査および研究の背景などを詳細に記載した。調査開始直前には、調査を実施する旨を早稲田大学の広報を通じてプレス・リリースした。そのほか、第74回日本人口学会大会において設けた企画セッション「セクシュアリティの人口学の現在とこれから」や他の学会で、JSPS科研費16H03709で実施した大阪市民調査のデータを用いた分析や、人口学と性的指向と性自認のあり方に関する研究成果を報告した。またデータアーカイブ構築に向け、「日本におけるLGBTQ+に関する調査等一覧」（釜野・平森・岩本編）を公開した（適宜更新予定）。
