This project aims to show that different types of information (visual and emotional) can be processed nonconsciously to affect concurrent or subsequent perception and decision-making. The idea that information is processed and evaluated nonconsciously to change behaviour has a controversial history. Using perceptual methods – binocular rivalry and continuous flash suppression – this work aims to map out how noisy visual, bistable and emotional information are processed nonconsciously, using behavioural, physiological and computational means. The project goal is to unify debates on how unconscious information affects conscious behaviour and show how unconscious information can change perception and decision-making.
