项目摘要

本研究は、南北戦争(1861-1865年)および奴隷制廃止（1865年）後のアメリカ合衆国（以下アメリカ）南部の公立学校を巡る人種隔離反対運動を、黒人の視点と経験から検討する。アメリカ南部では戦争後に解放された人々の教育に関する権利が社会的、政治的な課題となった。特に、解放された人々が公教育を受けるに伴い、黒人専用の学校が設置されたが、一部の黒人コミュニティは、こうした措置が不平等であるとして人種による学校区分の撤廃を求めた。アメリカ教育史では南部地方における人種隔離そのものを自明とする傾向が強かったため、こうした黒人の声は例外と見なされてきた。そこで、本研究はルイジアナ州、ノースカロライナ州、サウスカロライナ州、ワシントンD.C.の南部各地方の事例を検討することで、人種隔離撤廃に関する議論や焦点の差異、各地域における運動の連関について明らかにする。2022年度は、2019年度末から延期を重ねざるを得なかった四地域での現地調査を行う予定であった。しかし四地域全ての史料調査は時間等の制約があり不可能であった。そのため調査が比較的容易であり、かつ人種隔離反対運動が特に盛んであったワシントンD.C.並びにルイジアナ州の事例に焦点を絞ることとした。現在は、現地調査で得られた史料とこれまで収集してきたデジタル化史料や先行研究と突き合わせ、黒人市民運動の動態を分析している。この結果をもとに、論文を執筆する予定である。

In this study, the North-South War (1861-1865) was followed by the end of slavery (1865).
