本研究の目的は、農村電化が個人の就労行動に与える影響を、カンボジアのマイクロ・データを用いて明らかにすることである。農村電化は新技術導入を可能にし、様々な生産性を高める。人々の就労行動が変化することで家計所得が増加し、途上国の経済発展に寄与することが期待されている。農村電化は、小型家電の導入や近代的な調理法の導入により、家事労働時間の短縮と経済活動時間の増加をもたらす。この結果、主に家事労働を担ってきた女性の就業率が、農村電化によってもたらされることが先行研究で指摘されている。 しかし家計調査から実際の家事労働時間データを取得することは容易ではなく、電化と個人の時間配分変化についての実証分析は十分に行われてこなかった。本研究では、カンボジア社会経済調査2004 (Cambodia Socio-Economic Survey 2004)に含まれる時間使用データから家事労働時間を計測し、電化が個人の時間配分に与える影響を分析した。カンボジアの文脈では、電化地域は未電化地域と比較して、男性の経済活動時間が長く、家事労働時間が短いことが明らかになった。一方で、女性については時間配分の差がほとんど観察されなかった。つまり先行研究結果とは異なり、農村電化は男性の時間配分のみに影響を与えていることが明らかになった。短縮された家事労働時間の詳細は、主に男性が担っている「薪集め」であった。同結果は家計支出データからも確認された。電化地域は未電化地域と比較して、家計で集めた薪の使用量が少なく、市場で購入した薪や燃料の使用量がより多かった。本研究の結果から、途上国における農村電化は、家電導入による家事労働時間の削減には貢献していない可能性が示唆された。しかし電化は市場取引の活発化させ、間接的に家事労働時間の削減に貢献している可能性があることが明らかになった。
