本年度は、(１)現在までに発表された焼畑の事例研究論文の整理・検討から、地域別の焼畑の持続・変容の要因を特定するとともに、定量的なデータが得られる場所を「定点観測地域」として選定する作業、(２)研究代表者・分担者が「定点観測地域」を設定するために実施する予備調査、という3つのカテゴリーの作業工程を設定し、今後の研究の全体的見通しを得ることを中心に研究を進めた。(１)では研究代表者が中心となって、現在までに発表された焼畑事例研究論文を、web of scienceデータベースなどから集成し、地域別・時期別に整理し、各時期・地域の焼畑の持続・変容の程度、変容の要因(近接要因・究極要因)をまとめ、変容の要因にどのような地域分布の特徴が見られるかを把握した。その上で、予備調査地域選定を進め、エチオピアおよびマレーシアに候補地域をおくことを検討した。またラテンアメリカについても、ブラジルを中心に文献調査にもとづいて候補地を検討した。(２)では、（１）で検討した予備調査地域について、研究代表者および分担者が予備調査を実施し、熱帯林や休閑林の種構成を把握するとともに、熱帯林の増減にかかる諸要因において、どのようなアクターが関わっているのかを予備的に調査した。以上の作業工程を進めることによって、次年度以降、アジア、アフリカ、ラテンアメリカにおける焼畑と熱帯林の長期的な動態を具体的に明らかにしていくための準備を進めた。
