项目摘要

応募者は、2020年度に科研費特別研究員奨励費を受給してから、1902年に締結された日英同盟が締結された過程において、世論がどのように影響したかという研究を続けてきた。当初は、研究1年目となった2020年度に関連する先行研究の把握を進めつつ国内外の史料調査を開始して、2021年度に本格的に史料調査に取り掛かる予定だった。だが、2020年度から世界中で本格化したコロナウイルスの感染拡大に影響されて研究活動が大幅に制限された。本研究において不可欠である海外調査は、感染拡大に影響された渡航制限があったため、本年度も行うことはできなかった。このような環境の下で、研究計画を大幅に見直す必要があったが、それでも2021年度はいくつかの成果を挙げることができた。日本だけでなく、イギリスの公文書などはコピーが国立国会図書館憲政資料室に保存されているので、海外に渡航できなかった分、何度か東京へと出張してこれらの史料を調査した。また、海外渡航が叶わなかった分、浮いた予算を用いて、日本国内では閲覧しづらい英語の文献を購入し、先行研究への理解を深めることもできた。特にメディア史の分野では、日本国内の研究とは違った視点の研究が多数出ているため、これらに触れることで大きな刺激を受けた。2021年度には、4月にアーネスト・サトウ著『一外交官の見た明治維新』の訳書と解説を刊行し、その他に国内外の学会で合計3回研究報告を行うなど、研究活動に制限があった中でいくつかのアウトプットも発表することができた。2022年度以降は、海外調査ができるようになることを願いつつ、特別研究員として進めた研究を論文という形で発表できるようにすることを目標としたい。
