REM睡眠中に嗅覚刺激を呈示することにより、夢の情動性に影響が及ぼされる場合があることが、我々のこれまでの研究で明らかになっている。2018年の研究では呈示されたニオイを好む場合に、2020年の研究ではニオイを熟知している場合に、それぞれ不快な情動性を伴う夢が体験されることが示された。ニオイの好悪、熟知度は、ニオイの主観的強度と関連することが分かっており、ニオイを好むほど、また熟知しているほど、ニオイを強いと感じる。一般に、強い刺激によってもたらされる強い知覚体験は、より強い脳活動を誘発するため、これまでの研究で示された好悪や熟知度の効果は、主観的強度の要因が交絡した結果である可能性がある。そこで本年度は、ニオイを強く感じる場合にも嗅覚刺激呈示によって不快な夢がもたらされるかどうかを、ニオイの好悪・熟知度を統制したうえで検討した。その結果、不快な夢はもたらされず、ニオイの主観的強度は夢の情動性への影響に関連しないことがわかった。覚醒中には、嗅覚情報は末梢受容体から情報の統合を行う嗅皮質に送られ、その後認知や評価を担う高次領域で処理される。睡眠中は、高次領域へ情報が投射されづらい状態である。ニオイの好悪・熟知度は嗅皮質で処理がなされる一方で、主観的強度の評価には高次領域での処理がかかわるため、主観的強度に着目した本年度の研究では夢への効果が見いだされなかったのだと考察した。嗅皮質には夢の情動性とかかわる脳領域である扁桃体も含まれている。今後、好ましく熟知したニオイが睡眠中に嗅皮質で情報処理され、不快な夢をもたらすメカニズムについて検討する。
