本研究課題は日本絵画の技法材料史を体系化し、絵画技法材料史学の基盤を構築することを目的とし、特に中世以前の絵画材料に重点を置いて、①色料と基底材に関する基礎調査、②画材の使用法に関する情報収集と分析、③赤外線写真、裏面観察による線描情報の分析・分類、④画像資料集の作成を試みる計画であった。初年度はこれまでの成果に基づく論文執筆と資料整理を行った。材料学の体系化に関してはこれまでに収集した文化財の修理・調査報告書を見直し、特に色材の種類と使用方法、制作時期、制作地域の一覧化を進めた。また、日本画家の協力を得て画材の取り扱いについて取材を行い、実際の使用法、古典技法を動画で記録した。今後、こうした動画資料を編集し、教材としても活用できるよう整理していく計画である。作画技法に関する研究としては、過去に原本調査の機会を得ていた本法寺所蔵「法華経曼荼羅図」について、「本法寺蔵《法華経曼荼羅図》の絵師に関する試論」としてまとめた。高精細画像を利用したモチーフ観察、赤外線画像による線描観察を通して、本図における絵師の共同制作の状況分析、墨書銘に見える制作年記・絵師銘との照合を行うとともに、作図に際してかなり高精度の下図、手本を用いた可能性を指摘した。本図を手掛けた絵師工房が、豊富な絵手本を有した京都周辺の正統の工房であったことを推定し、中世大画面説話画の作画技法を伝える点でも改めて重要な資料として位置づけている。完成した論文は学会誌に投稿予定である。
