本研究は、ハーレム・ルネサンス前期（Pre-Harlem Renaissance）のアフリカ系アメリカ人作家をあらためてアメリカ文学史上に位置づけることによって、この時代の小説・詩・演劇の再考を試みるものである。具体的には、まず、アフリカ系アメリカ文学の流れ、とくに南北戦争前後のアンテベラム期からポストベラム期への継続性、そして世紀転換期からハーレム・ルネサンス期への連続性、を明らかにし、そのうえで、広くアメリカ文化のなかにこれらアフリカ系アメリカ人作家を位置づけ、これまで語られることが少なかった、人種を越えた関りの実態を示すことを目指している。2022年度はまず4月に、黒人文芸雑誌の編集者であり自らも作品を執筆したポーリーン・E・ホプキンズが世紀転換期の雑誌に連載した小説に着目し、アフリカ系アメリカ人とネイティヴ・アメリカンとの関係性、その文化的交錯を考察する研究報告を国際学会で行った。７月には国内の学会において、世紀転換期から21世紀にかけて脈々と続く黒人オートダイダクトの伝統を考察した研究を報告した。これまで研究を続けてきたジョン・E・ブルース（2019年国際学会で口頭発表、2021年論文を刊行）とハーレム・ルネサンス期の重鎮として知られるアーサー・ショーンバーグを結びつけて論じ、いずれも独学者でありながらアフリカ系アメリカ人に関連する資料の発掘、収集、出版によって多大な功績を残した二人を、現在のアフリカ系アメリカ人知識人の源流として位置づけた。この論考を、秋には学会誌の原稿として執筆し投稿した。また、2021年に国際学会で研究報告を行った、詩人・小説家のアリス・ダンバー＝ネルソンと白人出版代理人との関係に着目した論考を、海外の雑誌に投稿する準備を進めた。さらに、国際学会での研究報告を目指して、二人の女性劇作家・朗読家に着目した口頭発表のプロポーザルを提出した。
