项目摘要

令和4年度は、一昨年度からの研究課題を深めていきつつ、Afrofuturism及びOctavia Butlerについて新たな知見を得ることができた。まず、Afrofuturismについてであるが、書評を担当したイターシャ・ウォマック著の『アフロフューチャリズムーブラック・カルチャーと未来の想像力』から、Afrofuturismという現象が芸術運動にとどまることなく、ブラック・コミュニティの社会的な営みとして、共同体の形成やサバイバル戦術に深く関わっている点を学ぶことができた。このことは、しばしば芸術運動としての側面のみが強調されがちなAfrofuturismの概念を大幅に拡張する考え方であり、今後の小説分析、とりわけOctavia Butlerの小説の解釈に新たな示唆を与えてくれるものであると考える。例えば、Butlerの代表作『Parable』シリーズの2作品では、一昨年度の研究課題から明らかになったButlerの「出産」や「Black essentialism」への関心が、共同体の構築という作業に収斂していくように描かれている。第一作目の『Parable of the Sower』では、政治的腐敗や伝染病の流行などで荒廃した近未来のロスアンジェルスで家族や家を失ったLauren Olaminaが、彼女独自の信仰体系を通じて新たな家族や共同体再建を試みる姿が描かれる。この両作品ばかりでなく、遺作となった『Fledgling』でも、Butlerは一貫して黒人（の女性）が共同体の創始者となることや出産（と母子関係）に生じる問題点について思考しているように思われる。令和４年度は、以上の点が明らかになったので、今年度は先行研究などの文献を読み込みを進め、特に『Parable』シリーズに描かれるAfrofuturismから派生する黒人コミュニティの問題系について論考を深めていく。
