Comparison in Ethnographic Thinking in Antiquity: The Roman Period up to the Late antiquity (1st–7th century AD) (D01 [B04])

The subproject is investigating how comparative ethnographic practices developed from the 1st century AD to Late Antiquity and the Byzantine period (7th century AD) and how they reacted to the new macro- and religious-political changes (consolidation of the Imperium Romanum and spread of Christianity). Particular attention is being paid to the formation of new communities of practice and their role in the transmission and further development of ethnographic models. The focus is on prose by Roman and early Byzantine historians as well as Christian authors (church history, Hagiography).
