项目摘要

前年度に引き続き、ガボン共和国ムカラバードゥドゥ国立公園にて6月中旬まで野生マルミミゾウの採食内容と遊動環境に関するフィールド調査を行う予定であったが、新型コロナウイルスの影響で調査日程を変更し4月上旬に帰国した。帰国前に現地で行う予定をしていた輸出申請が行えなかったため、DNA試料についてはこれまでに日本に輸出が完了しているものに関してのみ分析を進めている。その影響により、当初計画をしていたマルミミゾウにおける人為的環境の利用に関しては、これまでに収集したゾウの獣道の位置情報等を利用頻度の指標として分析を進めた。その結果、ゾウが畑に侵入する際に畑内の人の様子を伺いながら様々な道から臨機応変に侵入している可能性が明らかとなった。この結果について11月にオンラインで行われた日本動物行動学会においてポスター発表を行い、優秀ポスター賞を受賞した。また、マルミミゾウの採食生態については、季節による変動と年齢による違いの分析を進め、9月に開催された国際シンポジウムと3月中旬に開催された日本生態学会にて、口頭発表を行った。分析の結果、年齢が低いと考えられる糞ほど「葉」と「木質」が占める体積割合が低く「草本と繊維」の占める割合が高かった。これは、小さい個体が消化しやすい食物を選択している可能性と、人による火入れで維持されている草原の存在が影響している可能性が考えられる。そのような場所は畑と比較して、人とゾウとで直接的なコンフリクトは起こりにくいと考えられるため、共存のひとつの鍵となるのではないかと考えている。現在、これらの結果を元に再分析と論文の執筆を進めているところである。
