Stomata are microscopic pores found on the epidermal of most ground plants. They play crucial roles in regulating water loss and allowing for gaseous exchange with the atmosphere. Our group have previously discovered a sulfonamide molecule, SIM1*, that exhibited bioactivity in inhibiting the opening of stomata. However, the synthesis of SIM1* requires multi-steps, and this research was focused on the development of a direct synthesis of SIM1* derivatives. During reaction screening, we serendipitously discovered a new and unique double-sulfonaminated imidazolone molecule, AYSJ929, that was found to exhibit bioactivity in decreasing the number of stomata in Arabidopsis thaliana. AYSJ929 is therefore a promising candidate that could help further understand stomatal development.
