项目摘要

本研究は、近代日本における「世界の諸宗教」像の形成過程について、いつから、どのようなものが、どのようにして流通するようになったのかといったことを検討するものである。2022(R4）年度の成果として、引き続き基礎作業となる資料調査・整理を進めた。特に、以前から内容の検討を行っていた『日本之教学』という雑誌を焦点として、明治二〇年代初頭の宗教をめぐる議論について検討した。論文採録誌である同誌は、編集方針として、諸宗教を中立・公平に取り上げようとする姿勢を掲げており、実際に特定の宗教伝統を弁証しようとする姿勢はそれ程見られない。しかし同時に、内容の統一性が弱く、「世界の諸宗教」についての知が未だ平準化されていないことが窺われる旨、指摘した。その上で共有されている論点について考えるならば、時代と共に人智が開け、より高等な宗教が出現する、あるいは必要とされるという宗教進化論的な感覚が窺われることについても述べた。また、引き続き黒田行元（麹廬）の明治初期の著作における宗教に関する記述を考察し、明治初期における「世界の諸宗教」像の描かれ方を検討した。黒田がプロテスタントをより優越的な宗教として描いていること、またカトリックへの批判も散見されることなどを確認したが、黒田は必ずしもプロテスタントの弁証を意図していたわけではなく、もっぱらプロテスタント文化圏の書籍を参照していたことからくるものと考えることができる。他方、黒田自身の解釈として、全ての高等な宗教に「天」との関わりを措定していたことも確認できたが、これは例えば儒教の素養を背景とした中村正直のキリスト教理解にもつながるものがある旨、指摘した。研究成果として、日本語論文を一本発表し、また日本語での学会発表を一回行った。
