项目摘要

内間安セイ（1921－2000）と内間俊子（旧姓：青原、1918－2000）は稀有なアーティストの夫妻として、それぞれ独自な造形世界を展開させた。アメリカ生まれの内間安セイは日本留学中に建築を学ぶ傍ら、美術への関心を深め、やがて版画家として活躍するようになる。俊子は、はじめ画家の小磯良平に学び、その後はデモクラート美術協会のメンバーとして油彩画やオブジェなど多彩な制作を行った。彼らの存在がユニークなのは、そういった各々の優れた創作活動によるものだけでない。その活動がアメリカを拠点として展開されたために、第二次世界大戦後のアメリカにおける日本版画ブームに一役買い、日本の美術家たちの渡米後も支援するという、国際交流の要として大きな役割を果たしたことにある。本研究は、内間安セイと俊子の創作活動をたどりながら、二人を中心に展開された1950年代から60年代頃の日米の美術交流の一側面を明らかにしようとするものである。4年目にあたる令和4年度は、コロナ禍の影響が残るものの、年度後半には海外渡航の道も開けてきた。しかし、勤務先での業務との関係から、年度後半での渡航は難しく、断念せざるを得なかった。令和4年度は、国内の関連する作家資料の調査を継続し、吉田博・穂高の遺族のもとに残る資料のうち、1950年代から60年の渡米時の写真や手紙などを調査した。なかに、内間夫妻との直接的な交友を示す資料も見つけた。さらに戦後活躍した版画家の小口一郎について、これまで行ってきた包括的な調査をまとめ、展覧会として実現させた。小口一郎は、内間夫妻との直接的な関係はないが、戦後日本における版画家・美術家のありようの一例を示しており、それを明確にすることで美術史的な知見を一層深めることができた。この間にも、折あるごとにニューヨーク在住の内間夫妻と連絡を取っている。次年度の渡米調査に向けて準備を進めている。
