项目摘要

前年度に引き続き，1960年代に行われた米軍など米政府機関から日本の大学への研究資金の提供に関する文書史料の分析を中心にして，関連文献の調査を行ってきた．新型コロナウイルスの世界的な流行もようやく治まってきており，米国国立公文書館など海外への文書調査をすることが可能な状況になってきたが，まだ入館人数等の制限があり，状況次第で閉館になる恐れがあったため，短期間に集中して行うことが必要な調査活動を実施するには不確定な要素が大く，本年度も海外調査を行わなかった．そのため，すでに入手済みの文書史料の調査と分析を中心にして，さらにインターネット等オンライン上での調査を追加で行うことで必要な研究活動を補足する調査を行いつつ，関連する入手可能な文献資料の収集と調査も行った．これまでの調査において，1950-60年代に米軍が日本の科学者の能力を高く評価して，共同の研究活動や研究資金の支援を行うことを目指していたが，その活動が日本国内から批判され，その結果，日米関係が毀損されることを米国務省が強く懸念していたことを明らかにしてきた．本年度の研究において，1950年代後半から医学と生物学の分野に限って開始された米陸軍による研究資金支援活動が，米陸軍側からの強い要望を受けて最終的に米国務省側が説得され，1965年に日本の物理学に対する研究資金支援活動を拡大させることになるまでの経緯を，ある程度明らかにすることができた．特に，米陸軍は民間企業との共同研究も行ったが，その目的は，これを端緒として，日本の物理学者との共同研究を行うこと目指していたことを明らかにできた．ここまでの研究成果を，2022年5月28日に開催された日本科学史学会年会において，「冷戦期における日本の科学研究に対する支援活動に関する米政府内での議論―物理学などへの「米軍資金」の拡大 1965年」という表題で発表を行った．
