项目摘要

トマス・ハーディの研究者の間には、ハーディがJude the Obscure(初出1894-95、初版1895）執筆時に掲載誌『ハーパーズ・ニュー・マンスリー・マガジン』編集者ヘンリー・アールデンの検閲を受けて、性的な挿話・表現の多くを削除・修正せざるをえなかったとの言説が広く流布している。本研究では、この小説の執筆過程を検証することにより、従来の説には解消されえない、出版社への抵抗とも言うべきハーディの改変作業に光を当てることを目指している。今年度は昨年と同じく、Jude the Obscureの原稿の収蔵館FitzWilliam Museum, Cambridgeから入手したマイクロフィルムを利用し、日本で解読作業に従事した。原稿執筆には黒インク、青インク、黒鉛筆、青鉛筆が使用されているが、経年劣化によるインクの褪色が進んでいるため、マイクロフィルムでは黒インクと黒鉛筆の区別や、黒インクと青鉛筆の違いなどが判別しにくい（全てが灰色に見えてしまうため）。筆記具の違いがハーディの執筆段階の確定には重要な手がかりとなるため、目視調査が欠かせないが、コロナ禍により、今年度予定していた渡英が叶わなかった。現在は、これまでにマイクロフィルムで解読に成功した原稿の約400葉や、デジタル・アーカイブで入手できた1880年代・1890年代の検閲関係の資料（裁判記録、判決文、報道記事、国会議事録、インタヴュー記事など）を使用しながら、Jude the Obscure論「『日陰者ジュード』：ファミリー・リーディングとの決別」（仮題）を執筆中である。また、成果の一部は、"Who's Afraid of Censors?"に組み込み、国際研究集会Global Hardyにて発表した。
