本研究の実績は以下の通り。1)メロドラマの草稿解読本研究の根幹をなすのは、メロドラマの分析であるが、メロドラマの大半は、草稿の状態でイギリスの図書館に保存されている。したがって、研究者(上原)は、メロドラマの草稿をイギリス(国立ケント大学のベッティングゲル・コレクション)からマイクロフィルムで取り寄せて、草稿の解読にまず専念した。その結果、本年度中に計16作品の解読を終了した。2)メロドラマの分析解読した16作品を分析した結果、これらの作品の多くがヴィクトリア朝のイデオロギー形成装置として機能していたことが判明した。とりわけ、メロドラマは、当時の(1)禁酒キャンペーン、(2)純潔キャンペーン、(3)帝国主義政策と深く関わり、大衆を道徳的な国民に育成し、さらに、社会運営上好ましい道徳観・ジェンダー観・人種観を彼らに植え付ける政治的システムであったことが明白になった。3)トマス・ハ-ディ小説の分析1)および2)を終了後、研究者は、ハ-ディのテクスト分析に移行した。その結果、ハ-ディのテクストは、一貫してメロドラマのプロット・モチーフ--特に純潔キャンペーンを担ったメロドラマのそれ--を利用していること、また、後期のテクストになると、そのモチーフを使用しつつ、純潔キャンペーンの偽善性を暴いていることが判明した。4)今後の研究への課題イギリスの図書館に所蔵されているメロドラマの未解説の草稿は、膨大な量にのぼり、今後とも解読作業を続けていくことが肝要である。しかしながら、資料の大半がイギリスにあることから、研究者は、1997年10月から1998年8月まで、訪問研究員としてイギリスの国立ケント大学に滞在し、メロドラマの草稿研究に従事する予定である。
