本研究の目的は、言語の構造構築操作のMergeと脳の一般特性のDeterminacyの関わりを考察し、その理論的及び経験的帰結を明らかにすることで人間の認知システムの解明を目指す生成文法理論の進展に寄与することである。Determinacyの重要性は生成文法理論の提唱者であるNoam Chomsky氏により2017年にReading大学で行われた講演会で指摘された。その後、Chomsky, Gallego, and Ott (2019)の共著論文の中で「DeterminacyはMergeの出力条件として適用される」という趣旨の示唆がなされたが、その理論的妥当性と経験的射程は明らかではなかった。そこで本研究では、DeterminacyはMergeの入力条件とした方が、移動の局所性を制限するMinimal SearchとPhase Impenetrability Conditionの余剰性を排除できるという点で理論的により妥当であり、また、Freezing効果、That-trace効果、Anti-locality効果など、従来の移動理論ではなし得なかったような形であらゆる移動現象を統一的に分析できるという点で経験的にも妥当であるということを実証してきた。その成果は、GLOW in Asia (2020)のProceedingsやNELS (2020)のProceedingsなどですでに公開されている。さらに本研究では、上記のDeterminacy研究から得られた知見からMergeの入力を決定するSearchを再検討した場合どのような帰結が得られるかを探求した。その結果、Determinacyで捉えようとしていた効果は、実はThird Factorの一種であるResource Restrictionの要請から導出されるBinaryに還元可能であり、Late Merge, Parallel Merge, Sideward Movement等のいわゆるMergeの拡張版をMinimal SearchやMinimal Yield (Chomsky 2021参照)に参照することなくMergeの中核的な特性であるBinaryの観点から排除できるということを明らかにした。その成果は今後、SICOGG (2022)のProceedingsと『The Linguistic Review』から出版される予定である。

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the general characteristics of speech construction and the determination of speech structure, and to explore the progress of cognitive theory and the interpretation of speech structure. Noam Chomsky's Lecture on the Importance of Determination Chomsky, Gallego, and Ott (2019) co-authored a paper titled "Determinacy Merge's Output Conditions and Application" in which the purpose of the paper is to indicate the appropriateness of the theory. In this study, Determinacy is the entry condition of Merge, and the location of movement is restricted. Minimal Search, Phase Impetability Condition, and Residual Property are excluded. The mobile theory of the past has become a unified analysis of the mobile phenomenon and a sound analysis of the mobile phenomenon.
