项目摘要

2022年度は引き続き前近代ヨーロッパと日本の書籍を対象に、その紙を高精細デジタル顕微鏡で非破壊的な調査・分析をした。ヨーロッパの紙に関しては、16～18世紀ヨーロッパ各地域の印刷用紙を調査、分析した結果、アムステルダム、ライプツィヒ、フランクフルトで出版された書籍に使われていた紙と、パリ、ロンドンで使われた紙は明らかに異なり、「紙」のヨーロッパ内の地域性を見いだすことができた。とりわけ、アムステルダム、ライプツィヒ、フランクフルトが印刷に使用していた紙の原材料にわらが含まれており、大航海時代以降に東アジアとの製紙技術の交流があったことを示唆する。この研究成果は、2023年4月に刊行される論文集Paper Stories: Paper and Book History in Early Modern Europe (Published by De Gruyter 2023)に収録される。日本の紙に関しては、17～19世紀の江戸時代の絵入り刊本と浮世絵に用いられた紙を分析した。17世紀後半から、絵入り刊本用紙には楮、ミツマタの混合紙、あるいは楮、稲わらの混合紙を使用していたことが分かった。その紙から多かれ少なかれ米粉が観察され、微細な木版線刻の摺を保証する用紙であることが判明した。浮世絵用紙には、楮とミツマタの混合紙に米粉が大量に入っており、さらに上質の用紙が使われていたことが分かった。
