本研究事業では、マレーシアを競争的権威主義から民主化した事例と位置づけて、そのプロセスを政治経済学的観点から分析する予定だった。しかし2020年に政変が生じ、権威主義体制下の政権党「統一マレー人国民組織」（UMNO）が連立与党入りを果たすなど、マレーシアが民主化したという研究計画の前提を覆す事態が生じた。2022年11月には第15回総選挙が実施され、2018年選挙で勝利した希望連盟が政権与党に返り咲いた。この点のみに着目するなら、今回の選挙によってマレーシアが民主化したことが改めて確認されたといえる。しかし、新政権では汚職疑惑が濃厚な政治家が重職に復帰することになってしまった。希望連盟（PH）は単独で過半数議席を得ることが出来ず、汚職容疑で起訴されているザヒドUMNO総裁率いる国民戦線（BN）と連立したのである。首相に就任したアンワルPH代表は、ザヒドBN議長を副首相に任命した。第15回総選挙から連立形成、組閣に至る過程については、研究代表者である中村正志が「『改革派』と『泥棒政治家』の奇妙な連立：2022年マレーシア総選挙」と題した約16,000字の論考で記述・分析し、所属機関のウェブマガジン『IDEスクエア』を通じて発表した。また、1990年代後半にUMNO副総裁と同青年部長の間柄だったアンワルとザヒドが再び手を組むという展開はある程度予想できたため、UMNOが分裂を繰り返して今回の選挙に至った過程を「30年来の権力闘争に最終決着か？：2022年マレーシア総選挙」と題した小論にまとめ、同じく『IDEスクエア』において発表した。民主化の行方が依然として定まらないなか、政治的連携関係のあり方と社会経済的条件は相互に影響を及ぼすものであることから、本研究事業では前者の後者に対する影響に関する分析を同時に進めてきた。その成果を2023年度に書籍として刊行する予定である。
