多くの人が訪れるビーチは、地域経済を支える観光資源として重要な役割を果たしている。しかし、気候変動がもたらす海面上昇等により、世界各地でその侵食が問題となっている。ビーチが侵食されることで、利用者の厚生の低下や、利用者数の減少による地域経済への影響が発生することが危惧されている。そこで、本研究では、米国ハワイ州ワイキキビーチを事例として、独自のアンケート調査と計量経済分析により、ビーチの侵食が利用者の厚生と地域経済に及ぼす影響を定量的に評価する。令和4年度には、令和3年度に引き続き、令和元年度にハワイ州オアフ島のビーチにて実施したアンケート調査で得られたデータの分析と論文化を行った。また、令和4年度には、2度目のアンケート調査の準備を行った。COVID-19の影響で、令和2年度にハワイにおいて観光客を対象としたアンケート調査を実施することができなかった代わりに、令和3年度に潜在的な観光客または過去に訪問したことがある訪問経験者を対象としたインターネットによるアンケート調査を実施することを予定していたが、ハワイの観光客数が回復してきたため、ハワイで観光客を対象としたアンケート調査を実施することを再度検討している。ハワイの観光客数は回復傾向にあるが、日本などからの観光客数は十分に回復しておらず、アンケート調査を実施した場合にサンプルに偏りが発生することが予想されたため、令和4年度は調査の実施を見送った。令和5年度は、COVID-19の状況、ならびにハワイの観光客数回復の状況等を踏まえて、可能と判断される場合にはハワイにおいて観光客を対象としたアンケート調査を実施し、不可能な場合には潜在的な観光客または過去に訪問したことがある訪問経験者を対象としたインターネットによるアンケート調査を実施する。令和4年度には、令和3年度に引き続き、その2通りの調査方法を想定し、検討と準備を行った。
