本研究の目的は、英国紳士階級の日本美術愛好家の社交の場であったバーリントン・ファイン・アーツ・クラブを取り上げ、①クラブ主催の日本美術展、②日本美術を介した会員間の交遊、③男性の社交空間における日本美術受容の実態（ジャポニスムとマスキュリニティ）といった項目を立て、調査検討を行なうことにある。2020年度以降、新型コロナウィルス感染症のパンデミックにより英国での資料調査を見送るという状況が続いている。そのため研究期間を延長し、2019年度の調査で収集した同クラブの設立や運営に関わる資料や、クラブ主催の日本美術展に関する資料の分析を進めたほか、二次文献やデジタル・アーカイヴを活用し、「②日本美術を介した会員間の交遊」及び、③男性の社交空間における日本美術受容の実態（ジャポニスムとマスキュリニティ）に関する調査を行なった。後者のジャポニスムとマスキュリニティをめぐる問題については、クリストファー・リードによってBachelor Japanists: Japanese Aesthetics and Western Masculinities（2016年）の中で取り上げられている。ここで議論の俎上に上げられているのは、主に19世紀末のフランスとアメリカのボストンを中心とした男性の日本美術愛好家やコレクターで、英国のジェントルマンズ・クラブに焦点を当てた本研究課題と直接関係するものではないが、ジェンダー的な観点から西洋の日本美術受容を考察する上で、示唆に富んだ先行研究である。最終年度の総括に向けて、2022年度はリードの研究をはじめとする先行研究をいま一度精査することにも時間を割いた。英国での資料調査が実施できなかったこともあり、研究成果の公開には至らなかったが、この点は次年度へ引き継ぐ予定である。

The purpose of this study is to establish a social field for Japanese art lovers of the British gentry class,(1) to promote Japanese art exhibitions,(2) to communicate among members of Japanese art,(3) to establish a social space for men, and to investigate and discuss the implementation of the project. Data from the UK Survey on Decline and New Type of Infectious Diseases since 2020 Extended research period, 2019 annual survey, collection of data related to the establishment and operation of Japanese art exhibitions, analysis of data related to Japanese art exhibitions, secondary literature, communication among members of Japanese art exhibitions, and 3. Survey of Japanese art acceptance in male social space The latter is published in Bachelor Japanese: Japanese Aesthetics and Western Masculinities (2016). This discussion is focused on the late 19th century male Japanese art lovers, British artists, and Japanese art lovers. This research topic is directly related to the study of Japanese art acceptance in the West. In the final year, the research of the first year and the second year of 2022 will be conducted. The UK data survey was conducted on a regular basis, and the results of the research were published on a regular basis.
