当初の計画では日本語モノリンガル話者、中国語・日本語バイリンガル話者、韓国語・日本語バイリンガル話者の3グループによる英語の/l/と/r/の生成を実験対象とする予定であった。しかし、2022年度も海外渡航ができなかったことに加え、対面で実験を行う予定だった留学生の来日が初期の計画人数に及ばなかったため、バイリンガル被験者は中国語・日本語バイリンガル話者に絞って研究を行った。2021年度はオンラインでのデータ収集を試みたが、音響分析に使用できないデータが多数存在し十分な数の発音データを集めることができなかった。そのため、2022年度は人数は限られるが対面で実験を行った。バイリンガル被験者は日本国内の大学に通い、中国語を第一言語、英語と日本語を第二言語とする大学生であった。英語と日本語の学習開始年齢および習得順序は統一できなかったが、英語を6歳前後で学習し始め、その後日本語の学習を開始した者が多かった。一方モノリンガル被験者は、日本国内の大学で英語を第二言語として学習する日本語母語話者であった。研究者が担当する一般英語の授業内で、被験者に3種類のタスク（リスト読み上げ、短文読み上げ、自由発話）を用いて生成データを集めた。なお、短文読み上げはリスト読み上げとの差別化を図るため、日本語の意味に合う英語の短文を即時に生成する形式に変更した。2023年度は、同様のタスクを用いて引き続き対面で、できる限り統一された環境においてデータ収集を行い、サンプルサイズが十分集まったところでグループ間およびタスク間の比較分析を完了させる予定である。
