本研究課題は、がん患者が自らの予見される死を、比較的長く生きる「新しい終末期」における経験を理解することを目的としている。より具体的にいえば、終末期を長く生きるとき、病の本質である個人誌の断絶（biographical abruption）をどのように再構築しているのかについて検討するものである。この課題に対し、患者の記した文章やインタビューデータを、おもに計量的に分析することによって明らかにすることを目指す。2022年度は、研究計画の最終年度であり、ブログなどにおいて患者自らが記した文章である「書かれた私」とインタビュー調査で患者が語った「語られた私」のテキストの比較分析を行い、患者がたどるプロセスの一般化を試みること、同時にデータ収集方法による違いについて方法論的検討を行うことを計画していた。2022年度に具体的におこなったことは、インタビューデータによって得られた「語られた私」の計量的な分析である。その結果、新しい終末期における患者の経験は（なかば当たり前とはいえ、）昨年度までに明らかにした「書かれた私」の経験と共通することが明らかになった。具体的には、標準治療では治癒が見込めないことを患者が認識してから時間経過とともに、自らの死を「受容」していくが、それは医療者や家族、社会が要求する、死の「望ましい積極的な受容」とは異なっているということである。ただし、「書かれた私」と併せて計量的に分析し、比較することが課題として残された。
