高齢者に対する舌清掃の介入が舌骨上筋群にどのように影響を与えるか検討することを目的とした。65歳以上の高齢者50名の被験者を対象に、介入群(日常的な口腔清掃に加えて舌清掃を行う)と対照群(日常的な口腔清掃のみ)の2群に分け6週間のランダム化比較試験を実施した。介入前の評価項目として舌の衛生状態、残存歯の状態、嚥下機能、日常生活動作(ADL)、認知機能、基礎疾患、栄養状態、舌圧および呼吸機能について調査を行った。介入終了時の評価項目として、舌の衛生状態、嚥下機能、呼吸機能および舌圧について再調査を行った。人口統計学的特性、身体的健康状態および認知機能に関するデータは、標準的な質問票の実施および施設内の医療記録を通じて取得した。舌骨上筋群の筋電活動を評価するために表面筋電図(sEMG)を使用した。sEMGデータは、マイクロボルト二乗平均平方根(RMS)として評価し、吸入および呼気中のsEMGと強制肺活量(FVC)を評価した。介入群と対照群の歯数、年齢、性比、BMI、認知機能、ADL、栄養状態、併存疾患状態、咬合状態、う蝕経験に関して、両群で統計学的有意差はなかった。
