The goal of this research project is a detailed numerical investigation of the nanoparticle synthesis from spray flames. The measurements that are carried out in the SPP allow, for the first time, a proper validation of the required physical models and numerical methods by comparing simulation results against experimental results. The nanoparticle synthesis will be described by differently detailed physical models, it is planned to switch locally between the models depending on the locally required precision. Elaborated preparations have been carried out for this purpose, prototype implementations of a monomodal model and a sectional model are available at the institute. These models will be coupled with an in-house large eddy simulation (LES) CFD solver that has been designed for efficient high-performance computing on several thousand processor cores. One of the major goals of the research project is the finding and further development of suitable models for the unresolved scales in the LES, which have been neglected in most of the respective studies although a significant impact of these scales on the results can be expected. Only these models enable precise numerical predictions of semi-industrial devices in the future, which have the potential to generate a deeper understanding of the complex physical processes during the spray flame synthesis.
