本研究は、ケニア中央高地における半乾燥気候下で発現している土壌浸食の実相と浸食速度、そうした土地条件の劣化する地域における住民の農牧畜業による生計維持の現状と時代的な変容、および水や土地、植生を主体とする自然環境資源の利用や管理の実態を明らかにし、広義の沙漠化が進行している地域における環境資源利用の持続性を、分野横断的に分析評価することを目的としている。当研究課題採択内定の2018年10月以降、（旧リフトバレー州）ライキピア郡の調査対象地において、1) ガリー浸食地でのキネマティックGNSS測量を実施し、年間浸食量などを把握するための地形データを得た（2019年3月,2020年2月）。また、2) 調査対象地を含むエリア一帯(約300 km^2)において過去30年および同15ヶ月の植物生産量変化を、衛星画像によるNDVI値算出により概括的に把握した。さらに3)気象観測地点を2019年9月設置し、2020年2月 に約半年分の観測データを得た。また4)近年の土地荒廃に起因する先駆性植物 (Opuntia spp., Ipomoea spp. )の出現・分布拡大に関する植生史分析試料の採取を実施した。 5)現地における主たる生業である牧畜の生計補填となっている地域内の採砂管理に関する基礎データ取得を進めた。他方、調査地域に隣接するエリアにて6) 斜面変動域の地形変化データの継続取得、7) および気象観測データの回収と観測機器の点検更新などを実施し、本研究課題での調査対象地域における自然環境因子の比較等の議論への準備を整えた。2022年度前半は、Covid-19の影響により渡航と現地調査が叶わなかったが、同年度末に3年ぶりに現地調査が可能となり、課題目的達成に向けて再度活動開始した。
