本研究の目的は、1.英雄叙事詩に見られる「去就の自由」を分析してこれを当時の実社会における同種の「自由」とともに日本の軍記物語や歴史資料の例と比較し、激動の時代に生きた人間の行動メカニズムの一端を明らかにすること、および2.軍記物語の成立・写本伝承にかかわる状況を実証的に記述して英雄叙事詩の成立・伝承に関する独自の仮説を提示することにある。上記1の点、すなわち戦士の行動原理について。中世ヨーロッパの具体例、すなわち実在の人物が複数封臣関係にもとづく「去就の自由」を行使し、相争うふたりの「主君」の間を行き来した事例を当時のラテン語古文書と封建法(『ケルン教会家人法』と『ザクセンシュピーゲル』)の記述によって分析し、さらに同じ事件がテーマ化された文芸作品(『君公の書』)を考察した。発表論文(独文)では文芸作品の有する史料としての可能性にもふれて日本・ドイツ双方で文学と歴史学の協力を提言した。なお今回の助成を受けて発表した論文には海外の研究者を中心に重要な反響が寄せられているので、現在それらにもとづいてさらに考察をすすめているところである。次に上記2の点について。まず海外研究協力者であるパウル・ポルトマン=ツェリカス教授(グラーツ大学)の仲介により、平成13年度に続いて今年度も英雄叙事詩の写本を閲覧する機会を与えられたのはまことに有意義であった。軍記物語と英雄叙事詩それぞれの成立および(写本)伝承に関する学界の通説を基礎にして現在比較をおこなっているが、特にドイツで近年大きな話題となっている叙事詩の「複数オリジナル」説について考察をすすめている。その成果は来年度以降順次発表する予定である。
