项目摘要

今年度は雪舟評価の形成過程について、申請書において提示した４つの側面のうち、近代における①美術史研究・②メディア、近現代における③文化財行政に焦点を当てて研究を遂行した。①美術史研究について、岡倉天心とフェノロサが残した、雪舟に関する言説を収集。ヘーゲルの美学論と比較・検討し、次のことを明らかにした。すなわち、天心とフェノロサはともに雪舟を評価しているが、天心による評価がより高いものとなっていること。このような評価の違いが生じたのは、天心とフェノロサが各々異なる視点からヘーゲルの美学論を理解し展開させ、自らの日本美術論や画家の評価基準を構築しようとしていたためではないかと考えられることである。②メディアについて、雪舟を顕彰する団体である雪舟遺跡保存会の活動の実態を明らかにするため、新聞記事や美術雑誌、保存会の実質的な主導者だった正木直彦(当時、東京美術学校校長)の日記『十三松堂日記』などから記録を抽出し、現地調査を踏まえ分析。近代に行われたメディアが主催した雪舟を顕彰する展覧会の背景となった、雪舟を評価しようとする美術史家や画家、実業家などの人的ネットワークと、美術史家による作品調査・研究成果の公開の実態を検証した。③文化財行政について、戦前の文化財保護の法律である「古社寺保存法」・「国宝保存法」から、戦後の「文化財保護法」のもとで、文化財指定を受けた絵画を抽出。絵画全体の指定数やジャンル毎の指定数の推移、その中での雪舟画の位置づけと指定の背景などを分析した。以上を踏まえ、昨年度までの研究成果とあわせて、中世から現代に至る通時的な雪舟評価の形成過程を辿ることを試みた。このことにより、政治体制や価値観の変動を経ながらも、なぜ、どのように雪舟は評価され続けてきたのか、画家に対する評価システムの実態を明らかにすることができるのではないかと考えられる。
