项目摘要

本研究の課題は３つの点に収斂できる。すなわち、１）20世紀初頭に活躍したイギリスのモダニスト作家Virginia Woolfと岡倉覚三（天心）の芸術論/美学の相関関係を解明すること、２）それによって、広くは、いわゆるJaponismeと称される東洋趣味が西洋のモダニズム文学の創生に深くかかわっていることを証明すること、３）ただし、この影響関係は双方向的である。Japonismeと呼ばれる現象の美学的解釈は、西欧の芸術論の用語で語られ、（この用語が横文字で記されるという事実に示されるように）西洋による東洋の解釈と応用が内包されている。「東洋」はモダニズムの発信者であると同時に西洋化された東洋と西洋の受信者でもあることを実証していくこと、である。１）の点については、岡倉とWoolf両者と知的交流があったRoger Fryを媒介として、岡倉とWoolfの間に間接的な関わりが生じ、Woolfは岡倉の著書を通して日本を理解した、と考えてよい。これについて確定的な直接証拠は見いだせないものの、間接的証拠により、これをある程度証明することができたと考える。２）の点については、FryがJaponismeあるいは極東の美術とその美意識がPost-Impressionism（モダニズム芸術）を生み出したことを認識している点が彼の評論の中で明言されている。また、Woolfの書簡の中で、（Japonismeの積極的応用としての）モダニズム芸術の手法を文学に応用しようとしていたことが跡付けられる。３）については、岡倉の著作にみる言説と用語に19世紀末の唯美主義の影響が跡付けられる。例えば岡倉のテキストとOscar Wildeのテキストを比較分析することでこの点がある程度証明できる。以上の論証を、2015年3月に出版した『文学部紀要』論文（"West Meets East")において行った。
