We propose to study experimentally and theoretically two novel concepts for coherent and dissipative interactions of quantum light fields with atomic media: cavity-field induced transparency (CIT) and dipolar-exchange induced transparency (DEIT). Both phenomena are related to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), but with the important difference that the classical control field of EIT is replaced by quantized fields. In the case of CIT, the control field is the field mode of a microwave cavity; in the case of DEIT, the control is the dipolar exchange field of one or more control atoms in a suitable Rydberg state. Strong coupling of the quantized fields to the atoms will be achieved by employing microwave transitions between atomic Rydberg-states. The quantized excitations of the control field make the transparency of the medium for the input probe laser photon-number selective. This will permit realization of number-state filters and transistors for optical photons, coherent conversion and dissipative state mapping between microwave and optical photons, and studies of atom-photon bound states and their interactions.
