本研究は，近現代の日本において，マツをめぐるさまざまな思想が，学界や政界，論壇の中で生起してから地方に普及する過程を明らかにしたうえで，それらの思想が，実際のマツをめぐる過去や現在の環境運動や政策に与えた影響を検証する。このうち，当該年度は，マツ枯れをめぐる論争と運動を中心とした研究を予定していた。実際の成果として，いまだ完全な形ではないものの，林学を中心とする学界の文献を収集して，マツ枯れに関する研究の変遷・動向を把握することはできた。政界や論壇における議論については，収集及び分析の途上であることから，次年度も継続する。一方で，現場レベルにおいては，これまで調査してきた海岸マツ林とは異なる地理的条件の海岸マツ林に加え，里山林におけるマツ枯れとその他の変化，それに応じた人間の関与・行動の実態を，総体的に明らかにすることができた。海岸マツ林と里山林とでは，明確な防災林としての機能の有無という点で，マツである必然性の程度が異なっており，これが人々の思想や行動の違いとなって現れうることを示した。さらに，当該年度には調査協力機関の事業に協力したことが契機となり，マツ林の現代的な利活用の実態と意義に関する大きな知見を得た。マツ枯れをめぐる社会の動向と一見相容れないが，社会やその構成員の思想や行動は，マツ枯れを含めたマツ林全体の環境と相互に作用・連動するものであり，本研究全体を貫く新たな着眼点となりうる。また，次年度に予定されているトップダウン型の保護・育成運動とも大きく関連する。ただし，近代期に関する知見が相対的に少なくなりがちであったという課題を残したため，この不足分は次年度に重点的に補うこととする。

This study examines the impact of ideas, past and present environmental movements, and policies on modern Japan. This year's event is scheduled for October 2013. In modern times, we know that there are few problems related to each other, and we should make up for them in less than one year.
