Re-examining the concept of polar auxin transport by the analysis of gene expression involved in auxin biosynthesis

The NtAMI1 protein expressed in Escherichia coli cells was purified to analyze the enzyme function. Itwas clearly shown that the NtAMI1 gene product has the enzyme activity of converting indole-3-acetamide(IAM) to indole-3-acetic acid (IAA; representative auxin). Novel gene that functions in the conversion ofIAM into IAA, which were previously thought to exist only in the bacterial genome, has been isolated fromplants. The finding of the NtAMI1 gene indicates the existence of a new pathway for auxin biosynthesis in plants.
