3. Workshop for Early Career Investigators "Dentistry"

Between 2000 and 2010, the number of research proposals to the German Research Foundation (DFG) coming from dental researchers was regressive. In the meantime, an increased need in the area of clinical research has been emerging (for example IQWIG’s (institute for quality and economic viability in public health) expert report on periodontitis therapy. Thus the VHZMK (Association of university teachers in oral medicine) supports an initiative an improvement of the situation. After successfully conducting a first and second workshop “Dentistry” for Early Career Investigators, participants of the third DFG workshop shall be qualified to write proposals for patientoriented clinical research and to create high-quality publications. The participants of the DFG workshop “Dentistry” will have all the prerequisites for their research career and will contribute to advancement of dental research. Focusing on “Patient-oriented clinical research in dentistry” in this third workshop aims at qualifying early career investigators for clinical research issues in the interplay between highest clinical evidence level (randomized controlled trials) and patient-oriented treatment and the actual dental medical care situation. The aim is the future improvement of the scientific basis for dental therapy. Considering research issues from all dental disciplines shall be another objective of the planned workshop. The goal is to strengthen the research environment in dentistry and oral medicine for the international competition in future. The systematic further development of the original workshop concept results in a one-week Science Camp in advance of the third workshop for early career investigators. It shall be sponsored by the DGZMK (German Society for Oral Medicine) and the VHZMK. Fifty to eighty early career investigators will benefit of provided theoretical basics and knowledge.
