Raimundus Lullus or Ramon Lull (1232–1316), a Catalan from Mallorca, was a troubadour, philosopher, theologian, and mystic in one person. In his enormous oeuvre, he tried to find a solution for the antagonism of the religions, especially Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, he himself was confronted with in the Mediterranean world. His new ideas have been discussed throughout the centuries. Even in today’s so-called “dialogue of religions” he is referred to as one of the most innovative thinkers in western tradition. His Latin works Raimundi Lulli Opera Latina have been edited in Freiburg since 1957. 37 volumes have already been published in the series Corpus Christianorum Continuatio Medievalis. In this new project, the Liber de quattuordecim articulis fidei, op. 28, of Ramon Lull, written in 1283–1285, shall be edited along with an introductory study as one volume of this series. In this book, Lull treats the whole Christian creed according to his innovative method, thereby distancing himself from a similar project of his senior compatriot Ramon Martí O. P. (d. 1285/90), a famous controversialist against Judaism and Islam.Until now eight manuscripts are known of this work, some of them written during Lull’s lifetime as for example the manuscript from the library of Peter of Limoges (d. 1306), who was personally acquainted with Lull. The voluminous book allows a closer look on Lull working on theology and religion before and during his first sojourn in Paris from 1287–1289. As a part of the complete Latin works Opera Latina Raimundi Lulli, this critical edition and the introduction will make this book available for further research for theologians, historians, and religious studies scholars.
