The objective of this research is to probe on the autonomy and functionality of NGOs under authoritarian regime through a case study on state-led NGOs in southern China. To this end, as planned for 2021, the primary work in the past year has been on communicating with local contacts who are closely associated with the target subjects at the site in China. Moreover, conducting literature review on the latest findings on this topic was another focus of 2021, all of which is to better design the questionnaire and polish the survey process in delivering and analyzing the collected datasets from the fieldwork in later years. At the same time, an on-line alternative has also been in consideration while working with the local contacts in case the pandemic does not abate at all in impending future in which conducting physical fieldwork is not feasible.According to the proposed plan, 2022 will be aimed at conducting literature review to improve the quality of questionnaire and survey process. Since this part has already been started in 2021, the project will have more time to be focused on data collection in 2022 which is originally planed in 2023. On balance, the progress of this project is ahead of what had originally been planned.
