本研究の目的は、19世紀アメリカのロマン派を代表する作家Herman Melvilleが描く虚無的描写（逃亡、自殺、破滅など）にアメリカ的理想の破壊と再創造がこめられていることを論じることにある。１年目の本年は、まず研究の前提を固めるため、Melvilleと同時代に執筆された文学作品を広く読解しながら、それらにあらわれる虚無的描写の分析を進めた。とりわけ研究を進めたのは、Melvilleよりひと世代前に活躍したEdgar Allan Poeである。日本でもあまり研究の進んでいない彼の第2作品集Tales (1845)に描かれる死について同時代の社会言説と絡めながら分析することで、彼がアメリカ社会、とくに北部ニューヨーク文壇への根源的批判を行っていたことを論じた。今回の研究で明らかになったことは、Poeの批判が単なる批判に堕することなく、むしろ産業文明が進み抽象的なイデオロギーが支配的になりつつあるアメリカにおいて忘却される肉体やそれに根ざす官能を再評価しようとしていたことである。本年の研究成果は、日本ポー学会第13回年次大会でのシンポジウム「ポーと戦争」での口頭発表後（2022年9月17日オンライン開催）、同学会の学術誌『ポー研究』第15号に掲載の予定である。また、本年は本課題において重要な位置をしめる論考を発表した。そこでは、Melville作品における中国と日本の表象をたどりながら、いかにアメリカ帝国主義がフリークショー文化と連動していたのかを論じ、作品に描かれる白人主体の不安定性について考察した。本考察は“Freaky Asian Junks: Herman Melville and Antebellum Exhibition Culture”として査読通過の上、The Japanese Journal of American Studies第33号に掲載された。
