项目摘要

本年度の研究は、以下三つの観点から進めた。一つ目は、ハーマン・メルヴィル作品における中心的テーマとなる没個性（impersonality）、あるいは自己棄却（self-annihilation）の概念が、19世紀中庸のオリエントへの志向と結びついていたこと、そしてそれが、彼が作家人生を通じて取り組み続けたアメリカ民主主義の根幹をなすピューリタニズムの批判と再生を目指していたことを論じた。つまり、メルヴィル作品がいかに、帝国主義的資本主義の勃興によってキリスト教の理想（平等、愛、信頼）とかけはなれた状況に陥ってしまっている同時代状況を批判しつつ、仏教などのオリエント教義を通じてあらたな世界を再構築しようとしていたかを論じた。二つ目は、これらの成果を、日本英文学会第87回全国大会（5月、於立正大学品川キャンパス）と第10回国際メルヴィル会議(6月、於慶應義塾大学三田キャンパス)で発表した。また、学会誌への論文投稿を行い、わたしの論文は査読通過の上、掲載された。三つ目は、わたしの研究テーマである環太平洋的文学研究を深めるために、カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校に留学し、本分野の世界的権威であるユンテ・ホアン教授に指導を仰いだ。アメリカ留学によって、わたし自身の研究テーマをメルヴィルのみに限らず、18世紀から20世紀初頭へと至るより大きな歴史的・文学的枠組みの中で位置づけ直すという、今後の課題を得ることができた。また、カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校は、現在アメリカ研究において盛んに論じられている環境批評にも力を注いでおり、それらを学ぶことで、ゴシック文学と環太平洋研究というわたしの研究テーマをより拡大させ、深めることができた。
