明治維新（1868年）から敗戦（1945年）までの間に日本が経験した社会・政治の変動や戦争、また海外拡張の原動力として、天皇及び皇室の存在が注目されてきた。実際にどのように原動力となったのかを理解するために天皇の象徴である「教育勅語」と「御真影」の役割に筆者は焦点を当ててきた。そして若手研究として助成を受けている本研究では、海外、特にアメリカの指導者や教育者はそれらに対しどのような評価を行い、そしてそれがどのように日本での政策や教育実践の形成において寄与したのかを解明することが目的である。以上の目的に鑑みて、初年度である2022年度は大きな成果を得ることができたと考える。まず初めに、米国に渡り関連施設（コロンビア大学図書館等）を訪問し資料の収集を行った。さらに2023年3月に開催されたアジア研究学会（ボストン）に参加し、本研究に関連する研究者数名と面会を行うことができた。また、本研究の成果を発表する機会をいくつか得た。例えば2022年10月にはアメリカのシラキュース大学で開催された東アジア研究学会に参加し、「Estranged Bedfellows of the Japanese Monarchy: History of the Imperial Portrait and the Imperial Rescript on Education」という題目で発表を行った。これら活動は、本研究を継続する地盤の構築につながると考える。

The Meiji Restoration (1868) and the Fall of Japan (1945) were the prime movers of Japan's economic and political movements, and the existence of the Emperor and the imperial family. In the meantime, the motive force and understanding of the emperor's image are the focus of the "education language" and "imperial shadow". This study aims to clarify the policy and practice of education in Japan by studying and assisting the development of education in Japan. The above objectives are reflected in the first year and the results of the year 2022 are reflected in the second year. Access to and collection of data from related facilities (e.g. university libraries) In March 2023, several researchers participated in the meeting. The results of this study are presented in a timely manner. For example, in October 2022, the University of Japan opened a seminar entitled "Estranged Bedfellows of the Japanese Monarchy: History of the Imperial Portrait and the Imperial Research on Education." This study is based on the study of site construction.
