本研究は社会科学における「職業」概念の整備を目的として、とりわけ社会学の1950年代前後の研究史を、理論史と方法史の両面から跡付けようとするものである。そこで当初の計画では東京大学社会科学研究所が所蔵している社会調査原票のアーカイブ調査を実施する予定であったが、研究代表者の学外研究計画に実施の目処がついたことからこの予定を変更し、当初の計画においては比較対照の対象として設定していたロバート・マートンの調査の分析にまず着手することとした。これは、2023年度中に渡米し、本格的にマートン調査のアーカイブ研究を実施するために、あらかじめ日本でできる準備をしておくための順序変更である。研究代表者はすでに米国のコロンビア大学においてマートン調査が収蔵されているアーカイブの予備調査を終えていた。そこで手持ちの画像データから、マートンがとりわけ職業に関連して実施したアスピレーション調査の部分について集中的な整理、分析を行った。マートンの実施したアスピレーション調査は、ただでさえその存在が広く知られてはいないマートンが実施した一連の社会調査のなかでも、あまり目立つ存在ではない。しかし一般的な論点として、通常は理論家とのみ考えられているマートンが自ら社会調査を実施していたことが、理論と調査の生産的協調関係を主張していたマートンの立論に、どのように影響しているかということは興味深い問題である。さらにマートンは職業アスピレーションを自身の準拠集団論や相対的剥奪論と結びつけながら調査しようとしていたことが明らかになり、その重要性が徐々に浮かび上がって来つつある。
