Increasing power densities in current technical systems as well as lightweight requirements demand the transmission of higher specific forces or torques respectively. One aim of the project is to generate adequate surface properties during the finishing process without additional coating or microstructuring processes. Several publications and own investigations show, that a selective microstructuring of the surface can increase the coefficient of static friction significantly.Within the project, correlations between the process parameters, the substrate micro topography and the coefficient of static friction shall be analyzed and understood. A time dynamic simulation tool should be developed to determine the influence of process parameters and tool geometry on the micro topography. The experimental design will be done by means of methods of the statistical design of experiments (DoE). Furthermore, the influence of tribological parameters such as the contact pressure, the mating materials, the lubrication and the properties of the counterpart on the coefficient of static friction shall be analyzed and understood. Analyses of the tool wear should provide information on the occurring wear types and their influence on the surface topography and the coefficient of static friction. Based on the findings, surfaces with a high coefficient of static friction can be manufactured by turn-milling.
