本研究は、即興で話す力を伸ばす言語活動のあり方を研究した。Leveltの発話のプロセスモデルに注目し、概念化の段階の負荷を減らした状態で形式化の段階の練習量を増やすため、ストーリーテリングタスクの内容を、3コマの絵で表したカードを用いて与え、また先行実践例にならい、同じ内容の発話を同じ授業内で3回繰り返させた。この活動を, 授業の最初の15分間程度を用い、指導者のモニタなしで2学期の間継続的に行った。最初の5分間は、形式の正確さを高めるために、ストーリー描写に特有の文構造に焦点化した、絵の内容を描写するメカニカルな発話練習を行った。英検準1級の面接試験または同等のレベルの教材を用いた。高校2年生の1クラスを対象に授業を展開した。1学期の最初と最後、2学期の最初と最後に練習で用いたものと同様のスピーキングタスクを用いてテストを課し、ICレコーダーで録音した発話を、複雑さ(AS-Unit中の節の割合)・正確さ(間違いの無い節の割合)・流暢さ(1分間あたりの実発話語数)の3指標により分析し、期間ごとに分析し、比較した。対照群のクラスを設定することが困難であったため、1学期には上述の指導を行わないことにより、その期間のデータを「対照群」のデータとして用い, 「実験群」のデータとみなせる2学期のデータと比較した。1学期のテストの比較においては、すべての指標において向上はみられなかったのに対し、2学期は、複雑さと流暢さの指標で有意な変化が見られた。平均値(n=36)は, 複雑さが1.57→1.78(P<0.01), 流暢さは58.11→62.97(P<0.05)であった(学期最初と最後の比較)。このことから、本研究における指導の効果が認められたと考えられる。課題としては、流暢さに向上が見られなかった(0.77→0.66)ことであるが、これは、一定時間内にたくさん発話することに学習者の意識が向いたことによって起きた現象であると考えられる。また、本実践で行ったメカニカルな発話練習の効果が、複雑さを伸ばすことに現れたが、正確さに現れるまでには至らなかったと考えられる。したがって学習期間自体か正確さを高める活動を長くすることで、この問題はいずれ解消すると考えられる。
