本研究は, スピーキング指導で交渉を行う言語活動を用い, 英語発話の質が向上することを検証することを目的として行った。1回の授業は, 授業時間の半分(約25分間)を, 交渉を行う言語活動を中心とした3部構成とし, 交渉に特有の表現に慣れるためのメカニカルな活動(5分), 交渉を行う役割練習課題(15分), 活動を振り返る活動(5分)と展開することを原則とし, オリエンテーションで交渉のノウハウと段階性についての知識を与え, 毎回の振り返る活動で参照させ, 発話プロセスの概念化段階での負担を軽減するよう配慮した。週2回・8週間に渡って, 合計13回実施した。高校3年生の1クラス(実験群・n=28)を対象に, 交渉を行う言語活動を用いた指導を一定期間行い, その前後にスピーキングテストを用いてテストを課し, 録音して得られた発話を書きおこして分析し, その質の変容を, 同様の指導を受けていない別生徒(対照群・n=29)の発話と, 量的および質的に比較した。実験群の生徒の発話には, 流暢さの平均値に向上が見られた(1分間の実発話語〔発話の前半〕58.07→64.54, 〔発話の後半〕48.25→53.57)。対照群の生徒の発話の流暢さの指標と比較したところ, 指導後の平均値の差には, 発話の前半・後半ともに, 有意差(p<.01)が見られ。また, 指導前と比べて, 相手の意見を引き出すことを意図した発言が増え, 会話が行き詰まった時に主導権を取って, 事態の解決に乗り出そうとする発言も見られた。実験群の受けた指導によって, 概念化や形式化の段階で生徒が受ける認知的負荷が減り, 対話の流れに自分の発言を噛み合わせることに必要な注意資源を確保して練習することが可能になり, 質の良い発話が練習時に達成され, 発話の質の向上につながったと考えられる。ただし, 実験群の生徒の受けた指導のうち, 交渉の表現に慣れるための活動と, 役割練習課題のどちらが発話の質の向上につながったか, 厳密には分析できない。現実の指導の条件を, そこまで厳密には統制できない現実を反映した, 探索的研究となった。
